This is a distinction that comes up quite a bit in the realm of 20 Things. I'm curious to have your thoughts.

Traditionally, the distinction between "fine art" and "craft" was both around materials and around production and distribution methologies. That seems to have changed somewhat (except at venues like, say, the American Craft Museum) and "craft" now seems to be used to describe the work shown in Readymade magazine, or on getcrafty.com or Martha Stewart.

So what do you think? Has "craft" become a perjorative? How is it different than "art"? Is there a gendered component here?

And most importantly (to me!) how do you see this distinction playing out in the 20 Things project?

Do you paint? Write poetry? Make erotic art sculptures of Dave
Chappelle? Well then this might be the thing for you!

DJ Death Squad Productions is putting on its first however-so-often-
it-happens White Elephant Art Swap. You give art. You get art. From
someone you totally don't even know! Interested? Follow this yellow
brick road of guidelines:

1) You must have an original artwork (any medium- words, paint,
tunes, etc.) in mind before you sign up, and you must give a detailed
description and/or photo with your sign up. To sign up send your full
name and mailing address to djdeathsquad@gmail.com. I will collect
around 50 names / artists before cutting off the swap. US addresses
only at the moment for postage / timing reasons, although I will be
organizing a worldwide art swap at a later date if this works out.
Artworks must be of your own original creation although
collaborations are still considered groovy.

2) The official swap will be held on March 10th, 2007. On this date
you will receive the mailing address of the person you should send
your artwork to. Your artwork must be mailed no later than March 20th.

3) On March 10th another artist will have received your mailing
address and will be sending you an artwork. This will not likely be
the same person you sent artwork to.

4) After the swap, if you would like to share a photo or comments
regarding the artwork, you can email them to me and I will slap them
up on a really sexy art swap community page I have yet to build.

Questions? Post 'em! I'm ready. Oh and please pass the word along!
Thanks!

I have been doing mail art for some time now. I am mailing these books to artist around the world, they elaborate on them and send them back to me, I am working on finding a gallery to show the completed works, but combinding them all into one reproducable book would be ideal. This is the first time I have mailed out books, I have done postcards before and I have made several artist books, so I decided to combind my two endeavors.

One of the many reasons 20 Things has been quiet is that I've been preparing for a conference presentation for Ciber@rt Bilbao in the "Museum of Ubiquitous Art" track. You're all welcome to attend! http://www.ciberart-bilbao.net

My talk is titled "Limiting Editions: The Constraints and Delights of Networked Art Exchange Projects" and here is the abstract. I'd love your feedback as I develop the talk - what are your thoughts on this sort of thing?

******
Network technologies expedite and expand the possibilities inherent in the collaborative art processes first popularized in 20th century postal art movements, and in doing so, expose questions of access, subjectivity and curatorial intent.

Using the 20 Things Project as a case study, the presentation will explore the intersections of online and offline exchange and how categorical imperatives of “art” and “craft” are employed, interrogated and occasionally subverted within the project specifications and individual artistic choices. The presentation will also examine the challenges and rewards of curating a project that bears as much resemblance to a traditional art gallery as a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) does to Solitaire.

The 20 Things Project is a web-based art exchange that invites groups of 20 artists to create limited edition multiples for postal exchange. Each artist in the group produces 20 objects in 20 days, and each receives an edition (one of their own works plus one of each of the 19 other artists’ works) in return. Each work is then documented in a swap-specific gallery on the project web site.

Projects such as 20 Things or Artists Trading Cards collapse the distinction between artist and collector, creating an exchange economy of each to each. Editions are limited and collectible but not created for purchase, and not subject to the restrictions of more traditional museum or gallery structures.

Historically, mail art takes as a central project the democratization of access to structures of distribution - participation costs are generally low, projects are typically unjuried and the focus of a curator, if any, is primarily on project coordination. Prominent mail art movements such as those that arose within Fluxus and Ray Johnson’s New York Correspond(a)nce School showcased work from artists and non-artists alike, though participation was often necessarily limited to those who the curator knew personally or reached through limited advertising and publicity networks.

While network technologies widen the reach of art exchange projects in exciting ways, wider networks make it more challenging to properly communicate project intentions and goals without becoming prescriptive, while simultaneously increasing participation volumes to levels that seem to require more restrictive curatorial practices of prioritizing certain values or aesthetics over others. This tension pulls the project in the most interesting directions, resulting in a variety of curatorial strategies and participation practices. The presentation will explore these in some detail, as well as highlighting selections of artworks created for the project.

Last year, the 20 Things project ran a wonderful holiday auction and donated the proceeds (over $2000!!) to ten nonprofit organizations. Details here:

http://www.20things.org/auction.html

This year, I'm hoping to do this again, but in a slightly different way:

- Artists will make work for the auction and select the nonprofit of their choice to donate the proceeds.
- Artists will then list their work on Ebay directly, and forward me the link for that auction item.
- I will post that link to the 20things site for the duration of the auction, which should send a lot of traffic to each piece.
- The winning bidder will pay the artist directly and the artist will make the donation directly.

While decentralizing the process in this way opens the possibility of things going awry, it also means that there is less work for me, which, in turn, means that I'd actually have time to do this again this year.

I'm really excited about it, and hope that people will make and purchase work again this year.

Specific deadlines TBD, but if you want to start making work for the auction, please do.

I'm a big fan of the project, and am thrilled to see the coverage. I'm also thrilled to see a 20 Things mention - but there's one thing that frustrates me...

The article says: "The 20 Things project (www.20things.org) invites artists to submit 20 small works to be traded for 20 works by another artist."

Which isn't really the way the project works - each artist makes 20 small works and then trades them for one small work from each of 19 other artists (plus one of their own). I find that no matter how clearly I think I explain this on the site (and I've tried several different ways), this is the single aspect of the project people just don't quite grasp immediately.

Any ideas for how I should communicate this more clearly?

What will happen instead is that people will create their work, then email me and I'll let them know where to send the work.
