changes - sneak preview

topic posted Fri, August 29, 2003 - 9:24 AM by  judith
Hello all -

So I mentioned that I'll be changing the format a bit for the project. People will still make 20 objects in 20 days, but I'll no longer designate groups of 20 and set deadlines. What will happen instead is that people will create their work, then email me and I'll let them know where to send the work. When I have 20 submissions, I'll distribute them and mail them back out - so it will take a while, but hopefully be less frustrating for everyone.

Your thoughts?

I think this is a good idea. But what will happen when you've met the 20? Will you send a general email telling people that it's done?

I'm just thinking that if you don't have a designated 20 people working on 20 items each you'll have a lot of people with half completed projects who'll have just missed the deadline...

What about if there is a roll-over. Like, when the first batch of 20 is done they are swapped and mailed out. And then any more that come in after that, get put towards the next swap. When that reaches 20, they go out too.

Maybe this isn't viable...I'm not sure how you want to work this.

Either way, well done for running such a great art project. I look forward to hopefully joining in the next round.

yes, that's the plan, just rolling over. anyone can make art at any time and there will be no deadline. it makes the project more continuous/ongoing, which has both plusses and minuses, but it might be less frustrating that way for both me and the participants.

I think it's a very workable idea. It also makes 20 things a little less exclusive in that everyone who actually gets around to completing their 20 objects can be involved. That way swaps may be completed at a faster pace as well so that those who finish their projects early don't have to waite on slower participants. I like it. It works with atc's and such, so I don't see why it wouldn't work here as well. :)

The whole idea (20 things) is just so invigorating ... I can't wait to participate. I'm sure that the logistics of organizing it will continue to evolve, but it's still going to be an amazing human event. With this new arrangement, it sounds as though the hindering effects of participants' "tardiness" may be minimized. Good work.

    Many thanks,

Okay, so at any time -- let's say for example, today, I begin making my 20 things, then when I'm finished, I e-mail you that I've got them? Then you send me a list of where to send them when you have 20 people who have also told you the same thing? Yes, thanks so much for organizing this, definitely a labor of love 4 U, when you've got people like me on top of it all asking repeatedly for clarification etc etc. Really grateful and getting to work.

Kinda. When it starts up (probably at the end of September), you can make your 20 things, then email me that you have them. Then I will send you my mailing address (not a list) and you will send me your things and I'll distribute them. Make sense?

        Why the extra step?

If this is going to roll over, why not have us send the packages out ourselves... certainly would save you a lot of time.

Of course, it requires a lot more trust in the folks participating... and trust can kinda be hard to come by.

The nature of the project is that it's curated. I collect the work (by participating each time as one of the 20 artists) and document it for the gallery. While 20 Things is an art swap, it's also a larger project about issues like trust and exchange and collection.

Which is not to say that the other way of working isn't equally good - nervousness.org does "20 Things-style" exchanges that allow for the swap of objects in the manner you describe.

Got it -- thanks -- glad I asked b/c evidently not a redundant ? at all; I mean I didn't think at all for a 2nd about the curating part of it, and that, of course, is v. cool and justifies the hassle of you doing the distribution anyhow. (So tell me what you do with the abysmal crap, i.e. send it to the annoying post-ers ... ones who ask 2 many redundant ?s . . . or, oh no! match em up, crap per crap, which means I know what I'll have 2 look 4ward 2, ha, ha. now aren't you so glad I opened that line of inquiry---)

But in all seriousness, now, I see yes that it's much better to ship them to u, for scads of reasons and I'm glad to do it that way alright; and sure, it is def a labor of love for you. Way down in Charleston SC I'm not able 2 b of help, this time anyhow, and 1)again, thanks! and 2)I can offer any copy help that might b helpful --- writer and editor so there's that 2 offer, and happy to just give something or other a last round look-over even if u find yourself wanting a fast smart final fresh eyes proof. Just let me know ---

Maybe it's not so much an issue of crap...presumably everyone who participates (or tries to) will have made an effort that, to them, feels genuine. At the risk of sounding a little Marxist, there's a bit of an element of "from each according to their abilities to each according to their needs" going on here. And in this sense it adds another level of beauty to the project. It becomes a kind of microcosmic experiment in the possibilities of a new societal model. Or a refurbishing of an old one. Bla bla bla.

Okay, I've read this several different ways; now epiphany: just ask! So, what do you mean? ("going on here" -- the "here" confusing me. Where is the "here" - my message? the mail art overall?)

Oh, I'm sorry I was not more clear. I was referring to the 20 Things project overall, not your message. I meant that the project, by nature, features works that are of all different calibre, and that I'm okay with that. In other words, that participating, in and of itself, is the reward.
