Could someone direct me to some samples of 20 things? I would like to get an idea of what to send.
I create altered books but have never participated in creating 20 things.
Looking forward to it!

Re: Getting started ...
09/02Go to the website: 20things.org
All the past swaps are posted. Click on the boxes within the box and you get full views. Don't get too caught up in what other people have done; make what you want, as long as 20 of it can fit in a mailing envelope. -

Re: Getting started ...
09/02With the new rules vis a vis mailing in, wouldn't it mean that only one item had to fit into an envelope? -
-
Re: Getting started ...
09/02nope. the new rules are only about the timing - rather than getting 20 people around a single deadline, we will have rolling deadlines. each artist will still make 20 pieces and receive 20 pieces in return.

Re: Getting started ...
09/03I didn't realize there were size constraints. Do all your pieces have to fit in an envelope, and if so, what size? -
-
Re: Getting started ...
09/03The basic idea is that one of your pieces, plus one of everyone else's pieces, needs to fit in a large padded envelope (generally about 10" x 14"). This works out well if your pieces are no more than 12 cubic inches (3 x 4 x 1, or 4 x 6 x 1/2, or whatever combination you can make. I'd love to do larger pieces, but then shipping costs become prohibitive and people can't participate.

Re: Getting started ...
09/03If I'm willing to foot the bill for shipping, would it be possible to do a larger piece? -
-
Re: Getting started ...
09/04Alas, no. Once we get bigger than a large padded envelope, it becomes overly complex logistically. While I can carry 20 large padded envelopes full of art from my house or studio to the post office relatively easily, 20 large boxes is a bit daunting. And you'd be footing extra postage times 20, so it could be pretty expensive. Constraints are good! Work around them! -

10 quesions read twice
09/04-Are you encouraging flatter items?
-Are there any other rules?
-Will we ever aim for themes?
-When can we start sending?
-Will there be critiques?
-How would past swappers rate their experience?
-What have past swappers done with their art?
-How do you work out shipping costs?
-Do we need to send along donations as well?
-Have you ever refused any art?
I was aiming for 20 questions... i couldn't make it and was starting to feel a little obnoxious. There are ten so read em twice for 20 questions. :P

-Are you encouraging flatter items?
Not necessarily. There have been some great sculptural pieces in previous swaps, and I find that three-dimensional work really opens the possibility of a wide range of media...
-Are there any other rules?
Only basic sorts of things about not sending anything particularly caustic or explosive or otherwise dangerous.
-Will we ever aim for themes?
Maybe, though the new rolling admissions model makes this much more complicated.
-When can we start sending?
Probably around the end of September, early October. I'll send an announcement to the mailing list.
-Will there be critiques?
It's not something I've given much thought to, but if people are interested, I think that we could use this tribe.net functionality to facilitate discussion of specific works - but only at the request of the creator, I think.
-How would past swappers rate their experience?
The feedback I've had to date: slower than expected, but really fun. Other people should chime in (maybe we should have started a new thread for this?)
-What have past swappers done with their art?
I have 20 Things art all over my apartment. My friend Carol made a great clothesline display for hanging hers. My friend Lance keeps his in a box.
-How do you work out shipping costs?
Artists in the US send me a large padded self-addressed stamped envelope with $5.00 postage when they submit their work. Artists outside the US generally trade me something of equivalent value to the postage - generally about $10 US.
-Do we need to send along donations as well?
Not at all, though of course I would not turn down donations (via paypal, to info@20things.org) to help pay for site hosting. But really, this is not at all required and barely even encouraged in any official way.
-Have you ever refused any art?
No, though I think I need to explicitly reserve the right to do so. Part of the goal of the project is to make the structures of art exchange and display accessible to more people, unlike more traditional galleries or museums, and the history of mail/postal art is an inclusive one where everyone gets to play. Still, I have my biases about the kind of art I'd like to see... -

Thanx for all the answers! I can't wait! My cogs are turning gotta some many ideas so little time :)

OK, I'll bite. What kind of art would you like to see? Just in general terms. Surreal, conceptual vs. nice craftmanship? 2D vs. 3D? whatever... -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.I was wondering if anyone would take the bait!
I'm away from home right now on a bit of vacation, but will try to answer that in more detail next week - I'll start a new thread - and am looking forward to opening some interesting discussions...
